Apple TV+ added Lessons in Chemistry to its impressive, albeit full of hit-or-miss titles to its line up. But the show has quickly become one of my new favorite TV shows!
One, I love to cook. Two, I love Brie Larson. Three, it’s an enjoyable feel-good TV show with Larson’s female lead having to persevere in her male-dominated field to kick some chemistry butt.
This show is very reminiscent to Julia, the wonderful Julia Child TV show on HBO. Both Larson and Child, played terrifically by Sarah Lancanshire, have to overcome obstacles (largely a very sexist society) in order to have their voices heard. Both women do so with cooking.
I have to admit, however, that watching Lessons left me teary-eyed a bit, reminiscing about happy memories and how much Mom had to overcome to be who she was, especially when she first came to the US. Coming from the Philippines, Mom told me that she didn’t know how to even use a microwave when she was left babysitting my cousins. A doctor in the Philippines, Mom was not able to parlay her skills and experience into the medical field because of the language barrier. She took jobs as a nanny or a caregiver, leaving behind her doctor’s coat and stethoscope and trading them in for diaper changes, scheduled meals, and medication. At 38, my mom gave up everything in order to move to the US to make a better life for us, her four children living back home with our grandmother…
Anyhow, be sure to check out Lessons in Chemistry on Apple TV+.
